Southside ISD Education Foundation Makes History $70,000 in scholarships awarded at Decision Day Event!

(original article) – Tuesday,  May 31st, The Southside ISD Education Foundation gave out seventeen scholarships totaling $70,000 to Southside High students at the SHS 10th Annual Senior Decision Day.

Thanks to the generous support of donors like Kym Rapier Verette and Glenn Verrette of the Kym’s Angel Foundation along with Barrett Insurance, Toyota, Amerigroup, Linebarger and Associates, Frost Bank, the SISD United Way Employee Charitable Campaign and so many more this was made possible.  Yolanda Valenzuela with Kym’s Angels says,  “Being able to support Southside is how we build the future. We are so proud of you!”

The ceremony recognizes graduating seniors and their post-secondary decisions announcing where each student will attend college or what trade school or post-high school training they will receive. We also recognize students’ enlistment in military service. Representatives from more than a dozen universities and colleges and representatives from the armed forces were in attendance.  The high-energy pep rally-style event takes a page from the athletic “signing day” festivities.

Each of the students was surprised with a novelty “big check” and presented the scholarship in front of hundreds of family and friends at the SHS competition gym.

The event has grown from just a few dozen students declaring their colleges of choice to more than 150 participating students over the years.
